Daewoo Motors Co. went bankrupt after the Asian crisis in 1998. In 2002, an agreement was reached with General Motors (USA) to sell the assets of the bankrupt Daewoo Motors Co. As a result, GM got the production in Korea and a lineup, which allowed it to penetrate into cheaper market segments than before. So the new Daewoo models prepared for production were renamed CHEVROLET and as such began to attack almost every market in the world. Not all plants of Daewoo Motors Co. were acquired during this purchase. Daewoo Motor Polska (DMP) was left on its own, controlling the FSO plant (which produced “Polonez” cars during the PRP), the Lublin plant (small trucks under the same name), and the Nysa plant (similar products). The same fate befell the JV Uz-DEU (Uzbekistan) – Koreans continued to sell them parts for full-scale production of the old Daewoo Nexia, Matiz, and Labo, but they curtailed their participation in the life of the plant… But in 2008, the Koreans returned to Uzbekistan and now control the plant, which has changed its name to GM-Uzbekistan.

On the other hand, in 1998, “AvtoZAZ-DAEWOO” joint venture has been launched in Ukraine, which, with the tax support from the state, has modernized the “Tavria” car, which remained from the USSR times, and started to produce Daewoo cars by SKD method of collective assembly. After the bankruptcy of Daewoo Motors Co., Ukrainian and Polish plants joined their efforts and continued producing Daewoo Lanos for the Ukrainian market – Poles are producing SKD kits, while Ukrainians use them to finish assembling the car. Since 2002, on the Ukrainian market appears Daewoo Sens – Lanos with the engine and gearbox from MEP (1.3 liters, 69 hp). The same power unit was installed on ZAZ-1103 Slavuta that was reanimated with Koreans’ assistance.
All this led to the fact that after the breakdown of “Daewoo Motors Co” company three “successors” appeared:

– Korean plants controlled by GM-DAT, producing cars under the CHEVROLET and Daewoo brands for the Korean market;
– Polish-Ukrainian group producing Daewoo cars for Ukrainian market according to above-mentioned scheme, as well as Chevrolet Lanos (reworked Daewoo Lanos), ZAZ Sens for Russian market through full production cycle in Zaporizhzhia; The Polish plant of the Group has full-scale production of Chevrolet Aveo (T250/T255) – hatchbacks for the European market and Ukrainian market and sedans for Ukrainian market;
– the Uzbek enterprise producing the outdated Daewoo Nexia and Matiz for the CIS markets. In 2008, the production of the Chevrolet Lacetti (J200) from SKD kits began. In 2009, the Lacetti should move to full-scale production.

And if the former kept the original structure of the VIN, the latter in some cases departed from it, and the Uzbeks, in general, began to use their own structure. Separate tables for these cases are given below on the same page.

Nowadays, the brand DAEWOO has remained, practically, only in two variants:

In the Korean domestic market, the same Korean-made cars are sold under it, which in the export markets are represented as CHEVROLET.
In CIS and Middle Asia markets, cars made in Uzbekistan are sold: Matiz, Nexia, Damas, Gentra (sedan Lacetti with the design of front end and interior of a hatchback with the same name).
In CIS markets, Daewoo cars based on Lanos and Aveo/Kalos II, produced by Ukrainian PJSC ZAZ are sold under the ZAZ brand.

If you can not determine vehicle VIN from the table below, try to look for analogs in Korean CHEVROLET or ZAZ.

The VIN of the cars DAEWOO full compliance with the standard was obligatory only for the deliveries to the North American market. In other cases, as a rule, the checksum in the 9th position of VIN was not counted.
